sunny sides up
i started drawing this in a new, 4x6 sketchbook. (i know, i haven't yet finished the other sketchbook, already lapsed in my resolutions and january isn't even over yet.) it's an expensive sketchbook, $22 at new york central art supply and handbound with arches text wove paper. i used similar paper a few years ago at a bookbinding class, but that batch of paper didn't seem as tough as this one, which is lovely so far. one page (not on this spread) has already taken layers of gouache without pilling, just a very slight buckling that flattened by closing the book for a while.
this sketch was of someone else's breakfast, while i drew and tried to figure out why my little kaweco al-sport fountain pen wasn't working. the pigpen-styled stamping was the open end of the ink cartridge, which seemed sluggish and cloggy. i rather liked the effect so i went a little berserk with it. then i added the gouache for the yolks. great fun.
